Copelynn's Journey to Better Sleep

For the love of all things why don't you have to take a mandatory class after/before having a baby on SLEEP? You have to take excessive amounts of education to be able to drive, take lots of classes to adopt or foster kids, pre-marital counseling/meetings before marriage....but a baby? Nope. Just take that little thing home and good luck!

By three months old we were in deep with Copelynn and her sleep, or lack there of. She seriously slept great until about 3ish months.  She was sleeping 8-10 hours at night without eating. She would nap during the day, although not on a schedule, she'd still get good sleep. Then things changed around 3ish months. I had nursed her to sleep since the day she was born---she'd never gone to sleep any other way. Bad habit #1.  And all of the sudden she was napping only in my arms, if at all, for maybe 20-30 minutes.  She had no bed time, no wake up time, no routines, no schedule.  I'm not about imposing your idea of a perfect schedule on your children, BUT there has to be some sort of order for the happiness of everyone in the house, that's for sure.

So, in the depths of our despair, we finally decided to move forward with help from a professional sleep consultant. It was THAT bad. I was TIRED beyond belief--physically and emotionally. I was miserable because Copelynn wasn't napping AT ALL so I could never get anything done + had a fussy overtired baby on my hands all day every day.  I had no idea how to get her to sleep.  Zach would come home and I'd just be a mess and so unhappy.

We started working with Nicole from Belly to Bean Sleep Consulting about a month ago and WOW what a god-send.  In four weeks we have seen the following:

-Broke the nursing to sleep habit, NO MORE of that. We now do our nap or bed routine and simply put her in her bed and in 5-15 minutes of being soothed she's asleep.
-Established a definite wake up time (7am)
-Established a bed time (it was 9:15pm because of her age, but just in the last week she naturally started going to bed at 7pm, which I LOVE!)
-Established a feeding schedule (every 3.5 hours for her age now). This was one of the biggest problems and accomplishments.  I was feeding her every 1.5 hours because I was mistaking her tired queues for hunger queues. Feeding her this often was misery for me because I felt like I just sat at home all day with my boobs out for her and it kept her from sleeping longer because her feedings were never meals--they were just snacks.
-Established a nap time routine
-Established a bed time routine
-Put black out curtains + garbage backs on the windows, got a white noise machine, and a lovey for her.
-Got her napping about 4 hours a day. She's still a short napper, but we're expectant for this to change as she gets older.

The process of all of the above was grueling hard work....nothing really came easy.  It was exhausting, draining, hopeless at times, and stressful.  That's why Nicole's help was SO worth it--she was there through the hard, teary times to support us, encourage us, guide us, advise us.  There were so many times I wanted to give up and throw in the towel, but she kept me going when I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel.  She worked with us to devise a plan that did not include crying it out--which is why we hired her because every other method I'd ever heard of/came across involved some sort of crying it out.

Everything in this process was basically trial and error to figure out what worked for her. At first we tried getting her to sleep in a swing--that didn't go well. Then we tried rocking her until drowsy--that didn't work either. So finally we simply placed her in her bed and shhhh'd her and soothed her. Bingo that worked! We had to learn her wake times and watch her tired queues. Learning to work with her and not against her took a lot, a lot of time....the whole 4 weeks!

As I put her to sleep tonight (at 7:00pm !), I just smiled at her, remembering the days that we both just  cried at every nap attempt.  All that hard work paid off. We have a sleeping baby. We have a napping baby.

We haven't arrived yet--we're still working on extending how long she naps and breaking her of eating once or twice at night--but we're going at those things with such optimism because we know it'll happen with consistency and persistence.

If you have sleep issues (who doesn't?), give Nicole @ Belly to Bean a call. You won't regret it.  You need more sleep :)

The Thing Nobody Told Me About Having a Baby

You get a WHOLE LOT of stories and advice and warnings from people when you have a baby....."oh get ready for this" and "oh my, when we had our 1st baby...yada yada yada." But one thing I have yet to hear from anyone that would've actually been helpful is how much having a baby changes the dynamic of your marriage. It is one of the hardest changes so far.

The lack of quality time we get to spend together is shocking and terrible.  This may be a little more dramatically hard for Zach and I because we went from one extreme to the other.  We literally have worked together since the day we met! We met in Anthem and were with each other everyday that year, our 2nd year of Anthem we interned together in the same dept of the church. We went from that to working together @ the same company, driving the 60 miles back and forth together everyday, working in the same department, taking our lunches and breaks together.  It was a blast, we seriously loved it! People would always ask us, don't you get tired of each other, you spend every waking minute together? No way buddy, it was the best! And its what I miss the most.

The real adjustments come when instead of cuddling on the couch together, there's a baby to entertain or tend to. Or instead of a nice, uninterrupted conversation over dinner, there's one of us trying to get Copelynn to stay in her bouncer or swing so we can simply finish eating. Or at bedtime, instead of laying in bed together, chatting about the day or whatever we please, theres a baby to feed or rock to sleep and we have to go to sleep separately.

Adjustments, adjustment, adjustments.

And that's what life is all about. Recognizing the beauties of a new season, but also being okay with acknowledging the hard parts & growing pains too, right? Right.

I reminded of Ecclesiastes 3:1 "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven." AKA, life is full of seasons, they come and go, they don't last forever. This too shall pass.

On a brighter note, we found a bottle that Copelynn will drink from!! So speaking of quality time; date night here we come!

Sharktank and Diapers

Diaper Diaper Diapers.

Cloth or Disposable...that is the question!

Zach came to me the other day and had this conversation with me:

"Oh babe, I forgot to tell you. I saw this woman on Sharktank who has this cloth diaper company, and they were awesome. We should use them!"

Aimee in complete shock, jaw dropped open "huh?!?"

"They're called FuzziBunz, here I have it on my phone, look!"

Zach shows Aimee the website and pictures enthusiastically.

I could hardly contain my excitement! MY husband was showing ME the cloth diapers that HE is into and wants to use for our babies? Is this the rapture, is Jesus coming back right now?

Women chat about baby things long before there is even a baby inside of us. So of course I had chatted about cloth diapers with my friends, researched them, tried to learn the lingo and all the different kinds...and had myself totally convinced that it was the way to go before we even thought about trying to get pregnant. I mean, seriously, cloth diapers save TONS of money and are so stinkin cute.

Zach on the other hand, like I'd expect from any guy, was not into it.  Poop going into my washer? um, NO.  There were many other funny comments but I tried to block them out. Sorry babe.

But now, oh man....now we are talkin! Now Zach is on board and now we are FOR SURE gunna try cloth diapers for baby Charnock! He's comin' to me everyday with a new thing he found about the diapers! This is crazy :)

And to make sure Zach was totally convinced, I put the pricing on paper....just to drive the money saving point home a little more. You can also look at Fuzzibunz price anaylsis here.

And then there were three....

Zach and I have some very exciting news to tell you all.
I've tried to keep it a secret, and hey I've lasted almost a week....but, I can't hold it in anymore!

I'M PREGNANT!! We're having a baby!!!

I'm due in late April / early May. So far the pregnancy feelings have been:

-really really tired all the time. Like I want to fall asleep while peeing kind of tired because I'm so sleepy. Zach love this lazy side of me :)
-really really hungry. all the time!
-heightened sense of smell. I can smell everything, x10000
-a tad moody :)
-sore boobs. Recent work outs have proven that I definetly need a more supportive sports bra!

We're ecstatic about this little Charnock that is on his/her way. We both think it'll be a boy; place your bets peeps, 50/50 chance!
