Sleep Apnea Update

Oh the journey that sleep apnea has taken us on...I feel for the people and their spouses that have this!

It's been about 3 weeks since Zach got sleep machine.  (You can read more about that here)

On this day I was SO ecstatic!! For the last year and a half I've dreamt of sleeping better. Our sleep quality was going to go from horrible to excellent, that the sleep machine was our sleep savior and it was going to change our lives in an instant!

Well......a little too optimistic Aimee!

Things got a little worse before they got better. That sounds familiar doesn't it?

Our conversations with people have gone like this:

"Oh yeah, my dad has one of those. He hated it for the first little while. Now he loves it."

"Oh yeah, my uncle has one of those, it took him months to actually sleep with it through thye night."

"Oh yeah, my husband's grandpa's cousin's friend has one of those. He couldn't sleep with it for a long time, now he doesn't go anywhere without it.":

These people weren't joking. We've both gotten worse sleep and less sleep since Zach got this machine!

Masks don't fit/dont work, had exchange them 4 or 5 times. Drool in mask, take it off. Suffocation/panic feeling...take it off....

BUT, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!!

Zach slept with his mask on until 5am last night!!! 5am you guys!!! Unprecedented success!

Watch out, the Charnocks are rested. The world will never be the same.

Sleep Machine!!

Just about the only on-going, consistent issue Zach and I have had since we got married is sleeping. oh my gosh....SLEEPING.

Sometimes, a night in our house goes like this:
Get in bed
Aimee closes her eyes
Zach stays up for another 30 - 60 minutes so Aimee can fall asleep because she cant sleep when he's snoring.
Aimee falls asleep, hopefully
Zach goes to sleep.
Something wakes Aimee up. Aimee tries to fall back asleep but cant because of Zach's snoring.
Aimee lays there awake for a long time.
Aimee huffs and puffs and toss and turns loudly so Zach can't can hear.
Aimee shakes Zach. Zach keeps snoring.
Aimee finally exclaims "I can't sleep, I'm going in the other room"
Zach rolls over "I'll go"
Then Aimee and Zach sleep happily ever after....

HUGE problem! People need sleep! People ask "Do you have a new born baby?" Because we look that exhausted. "Nope, no baby, just sleep apnea..."

hah, I'm just joking. We've never been asked that. But, I wouldn't be surprised if we were!

So, after a year and six months of troubled sleeping, we recently took the plunge into getting Zach's horrible sleep checked out.

He got a referral from his doc for a sleep specialist. Went to the specialist, got a sleep study schedueld, did the sleep study in the lab, and then got the results.

That takes us to yesterday. One of the best days of our lives, thanks to Olympia Respratory Services.

They told us that the average person stops breathing up to 5 times an hour while sleeping. Zach? He stops breathing about 64 times an hour...1/2 of those times for more than 10 seconds!! Try holding your breath....I got to 13 seconds and gasped.

Crazy talk!! It was good news to our ears, though, because we finally knew what was wrong and could fix things! So basically, Zach was diagnosed with "severe sleep apnea disorder" and received an APAP sleeping machine. This makes it so he doesn't stop breathing AND stops snorning.

Wait, no snoring?!?

OH MY GOSH!

This is a dream come true. An answer to our prayers. A solution to our biggest problem!! Life changing. And I'm not exaggerating people!

Praise God for the medical care we have at our finger tips and for sleep machines. Two things receive a kiss goodnight now; Zach and the sleep machine.

I love sleep machines.
